Bulls Shut Out

News Posted on Wed, April 13, 2011 08:10:30

The cows calve in the early spring, that is from March onward. This means that the bulls have to be kept seperated from the cows. For Tristram the senior stock bull this is like a three month prison sentence. He really misses his work! Hercules is a more sanguin bull and does not worry quite so much.

Gestation for a cow is 9 months so they will be together at the end of June. Not that long to have to keep your legs crossed Tristram.

We have just had to bring a cow and calf in from the field. The cows udders are too large and too close to the ground, and the calf can niether get her mouth around teat nor reach down that far. Trevor will have to milk the cow by hand and feed the milk to the calf to make sure the calf obtains the immunity that is contained in the first milk the cow produces.

Your father never said they were too big!
